Although known as "Mr. Republican," Senator Taft, who had led attacks against the New Deal, was reluctant to enter the NH primary against the popular war hero, General "Ike" Eisenhower. Hoping for an upset victory he took a hard-hitting 3-day tour of the state, but his stiff personality undid him.


"I am somewhat disappointed."
