WORDS TO REMEMBER

ballot - the list of names and offices on which voters make their choices

cabinet - a group of people who help the president decide what is best for the country. Each person heads a different office.

candidate - a person running for a certain office or position

CEO - Chief Executive Officer

checks and balances - a system of government in which the powers of one part of the government limit the powers of another part

citizen - a person living in a town, city or country, who enjoys certain rights and government protection

commander in chief - the person who has the final say about everything the armed forces do

Congress - the body that makes the laws of the United States. It has two houses, called the Senate and the House of Representatives.

constitution - a paper that lists the rules that everyone must follow. Countries, states, and clubs may have constitutions.

debate - a discussion in which several people give opinions and argue over issues

delegate - a representative

democracy - a form of government in which the people take an active role in decision making

Democratic party - one of the two main political parties in the United States

election - the process by which people choose their leaders by voting

forces - all the people in the army, navy, and other branches that protect the country

government - the form or system that rules or governs, or rules

hail - a word used to show that people are glad and proud to see someone

hero - a person who has done a brave act

law - a rule that all the people must follow

lawmakers - the people who make the laws

leader - a person who shows others how to do things or who goes ahead to show the way

legislature - a lawmaking body in a state or nation

office - the room in which someone works or a special job that someone holds

participate - to join in

patriot - a person who loves and is willing to defend his or her country

pledge - a promise

political - having to do with the way a country is run or the way a party believes it should be run

political parties - organizations, such as the Democrats and the Republicans, that have similar ideas about government and work to get their candidates elected

polling place - the place where people in a neighborhood vote

president - the highest office in the United States. It also means the chief of a company, a college, or a club.

primary election - an election held before election day to slim down the list of candidates

process - the way in which something is done

registration - the process by which a person's name is placed on an official list of voters

Republican Party - one of the two main political parties in the United States

representative - a person who acts or speaks for other people

responsible - having to answer for doing something as part of one's job

sacrifice - to give up something precious, often on behalf of someone else

secretary of state - the person who heads the office that deals with the United States and its place in the world. Every state has its own secretary of state.

speech - a talk that is given to a group of people

staff - a group of people who work to help a leader

State Senate - the senior body of the legislature. We have 24 state senators in New Hampshire.

Town Meeting - a meeting of town citizens

voting - a method by which people choose what they want from a group of choices
