Author's Objective
This study guide is not designed to be an in-depth analysis or chronology of the New Hampshire Presidential Primary. It is an accompaniment to the trading cards, which are indeed quite unusual. It is meant to stir up interest into what our first-in-the-nation tradition has meant to the Granite State, why we should preserve it, and its importance to the selection of candidates qualified and worthy of the American Presidency.
The trading cards are so unique in themselves, they will provide immediate enticement to young people already familiar with collecting. The assortment of candidates makes the point that almost any American can join this open, proven democratic process, weaning out the less popular at the ballot box.
Glimpses into the electoral process, the variety of promotional concepts utilized by a candidate, and the enormous impact of media on government and elections should prove interesting topics for class and home discussions.
Activities, questions or ideas for discussion, along with definitions that may invite a quick review are inserted as diversions to the text. Other ideas can be used with the trading cards. Some are brief lessons perhaps already learned by the students, or covered in other disciplines. Most are suggested to bring family or friends into the discourse, as with remembering "old sayings." Adults have been known to enjoy adding their precious gems to such family banter.
The pages are grouped in one, two, or three-page units, easy to remove from the binder for copying and distribution. A simple quiz is provided as a quick Q&A.
Politics is a practical art. It should be fun, a medium for young and old that is relevant to our current lifestyle, and germane to the promotional world in which we live.
