“Travels with Frank and Jane: the Pierce’s European vacation”
Peter Wallner, The New Hampshire Historical Society

After Franklin Pierce left the presidency in 1857, he and his wife Jane traveled in Europe for two years.  Letters written during their trip reveal much about their relationship, their personalities, their friendships, and their interests. For example, we learn about Pierce’s fascination with trout fishing, and Jane’s interest in the transatlantic telegraph. Pierce biographer, Peter Wallner, will explore this more personal side of President Pierce and the First Lady during his lunchtime program.
